LEBANON — Arc Rehab Services is expanding its adult living skills program into a $550,000 building to open this fall.  Arc and United Way of Central Indiana are splitting the cost.  The Lebanon Plan Commission approved Arc’s development plan for the building Monday. Because no variances were needed, the agency can begin construction immediately, Lebanon Building Inspector administrative assistant Kristy Culley said. A hallway will connect the new building, at 819 W. Main St., with an existing structure at 825 W. Main.

Between 45 and 48 adults are now clients of Arc’s Personal & Community Services Program,  Arc Executive Director Brent Cardin said. Program Participants also come from Hamilton and Marion counties. The program helps people with disabilities become more independent, Cardin said Tuesday. The seven-person program staff offers training in cooking, shopping, grooming, hygiene, computer skills and more. When this program began about 10 years ago, five people were enrolled, Cardin said.

Boone County population growth is one reason the program has grown, he said. “The second reason we would like to think would be our services are more well known, ”he said  “because we have what we consider state-of-the-art programs,” Cardin said. The new building will enhance those offerings, he said. The 4,180-square-feet building will include areas for dining, laundry, exercise, art and a kitchen/classroom, Cardin said.   The building is scheduled to be finished “between Thanksgiving and Christmas” this year.  Arc operates one of the few centers in Indiana that teach daily living skills for people with multiple and involved disabilites, Cardin said. Cooking and safety skills will be taught in the kitchen area, for example. Half of the kitchen will be wheelchair-accessible, Cardin said. “People will be welcome to stop by to view some of the ideas we have come up with for people who use wheelchairs.” Call Cardin at (765) 482-6815 for more information about Arc’s Personal & Community Services program.
