Lisa Smallback is finally close to reaching her life long dreams. This summer, she hopes to be living independently, working, and enjoying the community she loves.

When Lisa was born, she was placed in an incubator. What was unknown at the time was that the incubator was malfunctioning. As a result, Lisa has been challenged with mild mental retardation and tremors through her life. In spite of these challenges, Lisa was married for twenty-nine years and had a son. She then found her self divorced. She moved to Lebanon, Indiana to live with her sister. This was in 2005.  Approximately a year later, Lisa returned home one day to find her sister had suddenly died of what was determined as a seizure. Lisa has always felt that if she had returned home sooner, things might have been different.

The condo had to be sold. But as a result of family and friends of she and her sister, Lisa was able to move into a group home in Indianapolis. In addition, Lisa began working at Mainstreet Enterprises, a work skill training program of Arc Rehab Services in Lebanon. Lisa seemed appreciative of the supports she was receiving but she wanted to live on her own, see her friends and attend her church in the community she came to love. Fortunately, Lisa’s family and friends continued their efforts and Lisa moved to a group home operated by Houston Group Homes in the Lebanon area.

At Houston and Arc Rehab Lisa has worked very hard on increasing her living and vocational skills. This summer Lisa will move into her own apartment. Recently, she was referred to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to gain support in finding and keeping a job in Boone County. In the very near future, Lisa will begin living her dreams.

Lisa is a delightful person with a big smile and a genuine interest in others. She consistently expresses appreciation to her family, friends and those who have supported her. For those of us who have the privilege of knowing Lisa, we thank her. She has taught us hope, courage, hard work, and the determination of people who care can make a difference in finding our dreams.
